You may have seen these little buggers out and about, but like me, you may not know what they are. I did some research and found out that these are box elder beetles. Ironically (or not so), there are quite a few box elder trees in my back yard. The beetles don't seem to eat anything other than the box elders (I would not mind if they eat them to the ground), but you may notice them congregating in various locations. These were on a slate beside my corn garden. This photo is of adolescents. Adults have a mostly black top-side and I believe this coloring will appear as the wings grow in.
